Mirror Maze

No. 1

Big band — Modern jazz / fusion

Commissioned for a performance in May 2026 of the Tilburg Big Band, featuring acclaimed Portuguese saxophone player Fabio de Almeida. Originally, the songs, composed by Fabio, off the record Requiem for a Dragon, had a more free jazz ring to it and I had a lot of fun adapting them to a 19-piece ensemble.

Absolute East

No. 3

Big band — Modern jazz / crossover / oriental fusion

Written for Bucharest’s Radio Big Band as part of the ‘Writing for Big Band - A Challenge?’ European contest, the piece received many compliments and got the 3rd prize. Having full creative freedom, I allowed myself to include musical elements I love from styles outside of the jazz tradition, such as: non-western harmony, fast ornamented traditional Balkan themes, gypsy fanfare and short-long-pulse-based eastern folk rhythms.

No. 4

Big band — Bebop / swing

Arranged one of my favourite jazz standards for the Fontys Conservatory Big Band in 2023. I decided to give it a burning swing flip, from the original more cool tone of the song, and threw at it several elements that I thought would give it as much bite as possible: drum solo, sax soli and a ragtime piano break.

Gypsy Movie

No. 5

Marching band — Gypsy fanfare / soundtrack

Commissioned for Iris Nedea, an aspiring director from Romania, set to release her first film in December 2026, this song is set to be the soundtrack for the last scene of this movie. I wrote and recorded it, then later mixed and mastered at the SAE Institute Amsterdam together with Samuel Tunderligeti. The requirement for this track was to portray a clownish, satirical, yet lamenting funeral marching fanfare, appropriate for the ending of a film that showcases life in a post-war country.
